24/03/2008 - Holland left frustrated
STEVE Holland admitted Walsall's last-gasp equaliser took the shine off a hard-working Crewe display at the Bescot Stadium today.
Home defender Ian Roper headed home a corner in the fourth minute of stoppage time to cancel out Nicky Maynard's strike on the hour-mark.
Crewe were forced to defend furiously at times against a barrage of crosses, but appeared to have held on for what would have been their third consecutive win.
"To have victory snatched from us right at the death was very disappointing," admitted Holland.
"That extra two points could have made all the difference.
"The players are bitterly disappointed, but it is still a good point for us.
"We always were wary about Tommy Mooney when he got in the box and they were getting the crosses in there."
But despite the blow of Roper's goal, victory for neighbours Port Vale over Gillingham has given Crewe a five-point cushion from the drop zone.
